Overgrowth Related Website

Post by Mikelmao » Mon Feb 20, 2012 7:12 am

Hello everyone!

Even since i purchased the game (1 day ago lol) iv been wanting to start a project for it, i have decided to make a website for overgrowth but i have no deffinate plans on what the website is going to do.

With that said, i was hoping the community would give me some idea's on what you guys would like to see and based on your replies i will make my decision. I will update the list of ideas below as soon as more idea's are given. If you have any questions dont hesitate to post :)

Also if you are looking to help out with the project, you can! The following functions are going to be needed:
Web Designer (To make the websie design in photoshop, i can change it to CSS but if you can do that too it would be helpfull)
Experienced Players (People who have experience playing the game, knows alot about the game and constantly follow's development of the project)

So now the idea's:

Ideas
A mod/map website (A website on which overgrowth relates mod's and map's can be posted by the community and downloaded)
Make other versions for the current UI

Thanks for taking the time to read the post and don't forget to reply below :)

I don't think a mod making website would be practical to make, seeing as the SUM OG Tools team is already making their own. And their website will be hard to compete against.

Here's why:

They feature a Game Launcher that integrates a Mod Browser into the game, auto-updating features and other very synchronised and automatic features.
Naturally, they're also making a site with hopefully a lot of the same capabilities. They're working closely with David, the coder for Overgrowth, to make this all work.

Competing against such a mod browser is not a feat most people can do. I would suggest a different kind of site, or at least a site that won't be seen as "worse option" but rather something people can use while still using SUM OG Utilities.

Hmm, he could get a team together and start a major modification. He could even spend (A LOT) of time restructuring the current build of Overgrowth to fit a totally different game's genre. Could make a third or first person shooter. It's easy to forget that we not only get OG, but our preorder gives us access to the Pheonix engine. Everything that David has done with OG, right from when we used to have Rabbot, is possible fore modders. It just takes time and smarts. So he could make new rigs, animation sets, characters, weapons, terrains, assets and make a sci-fi game with laser blasters by modifying the scripts. Not an easy task, but it isn't impossible.

Indeed, I don't know how that will be right now under the intensive updating though.. Last has had to constantly update his blood/nodeath mod for a while now, and the bigger the mod, the more difficulties.
I would suggest making several smaller assets, rather than a complete revamp of the game. You could make large packs of weapons, map packs, parkour challenges, playable characters..

If you're not into making the mods yourself though, you could always ask someone to team up with you. :)

Well, if it was a total conversion, you could just release it as a stand alone game under the Pheonix engine. You wouldn't have to update it unless you wanted any added modding benefits, like better script communication and such.
But yeah, a total conversion in the first place is a big task, and of an alpha would be rather silly.

Ye i dont think ill be doing the Mod/Map site but it's none the less one of the idea's given to me so i added it just for content sake. It would be too difficult to compete against them mainly because they are working together with David.. So for now im just waiting for any other suggestion by the community of something they would like to see.

Also reguarding the modifications, i dont think its smart to make any high-end mod for overgrowth due to the weekly updates like you guys said. Also the scripting feature's isn't really working at the moment so your very limited towards what you can do with scripting so for now ill only focus on making a website related to the game and maybe in the future i will switch over to developing actual modifications for the game.

In resume, i hope some people in the community post some creative idea's for what they would like a website to do.

Overgrowth's User Interface uses CSS for the styles. You could try doing alternate styles and new menus for OG itself.

There already is a website. www.wolfire.com/overgrowth. I think that one is adequate, really.
