Plot and Lore theories

Post by Doggyhugger » Sat Apr 14, 2012 6:17 pm

One thing I like about games, books and movies is bothe the plot and backround since otherwise there some that look really similar to others.
This thread is meant to round up all the existing lore and plot details (for example, those found in the art asset overview videos), and make theories of how the game of overgrowth will develop according to them.
I, personally, wouldnt like too many plot and lore suggestions, but, well, it's not like I can keep you from saying what you want in the game.

A few things as I interpreted them:

Dogs:
Dogs seem to work in a caste system, where the lowest are treated as badly as slaves, although not stated to work or act as them or equivalent within society as they appear very marginalized. Well evolved with metalworks and stoneworks, to produce their weapons, highly varied, ranging from daggers to spears to stone warmaces, and armor, leather and steel splint.

Rats:
Tribal in nature, living in straw and wood-made huts, not well developed with metalwork, crude iron weapons and mostly fur/leather armor.

Cats:
They seem the most economic over military inclined race. Looks over functionality, although just as deadly, their weapons seem to rely on finesse rather than brute strength, rapiers, daggers, etc, and their armor is of steel plate and padded silk. Part of their military force is formed of hired mercenaries, apparently mostly dogs, further enforcing that they are the strongest economic force amongst the main races.

Rabbits:
Not the most developed craftsman when it comes to buildings, living in relatively small, round, huts, however with walls of crude stonework, unlike rats, and roofs of straw and wood. It is stated they aren't kin to producing weaponry, although rabbit blacksmiths are not unheard of. They appear to follow a religion with clergy rankings, such as priestesses and priests, etc, it is also possible their medicinal skills stem from their religious knowledge, which seems to be quite advanced in comparison to rats' and cats'.

Wolves:
Bigger, talking, versions of their real, wild, selves.

Of course, this is all based on some facts, blurry lines and lots of personal interpretation.

If requested I can post the references, though I'd hope not having to look for it.

I also found by chance, in the art asset overview #3, some talk about monoliths spread throughout the game's setting from which metals are extracted, yet grow back over time. Aubrey said that different species react differently to this monoliths (For examle: cats being wary of them, dogs happily extracting minerals from them to make weapons and buildings).

Ayeah!
The monoliths grow n stuff! It's pretty cool stuff. There's a wiki article about a little battle between two dog clans. Can't remember the details, but one of them enjoyed cutting up rocks, presumably from monoliths. Unrelated, but enjoy it anyways.

not just a wiki article, it's a blog post somewhere! but I don't believe they mined monoliths, rather it said they worked with stone and were in a quarry, which doesn't imply monoliths to me. but hey maybe that's just my interpretation not attempting to dickishly correct you or anything! in any case here's the blog post http://blog.wolfire.com/2010/03/Drop-the-hammer

I refuse to participate in this conspiratorial silliness and prefer to be led by the nose into all the misleading hints the devs will give, only to be pleasantly surprised at whatever it is they do end up publishing.

And yes, the surprise will be pleasant. It is science fact.

Actually, the OG comic states that there is one rabbit blacksmith, of unequalled skill.
Unfortunately we have been left on a cliff-hanger as to who that actually is... :(

In any case, there's only one worth mentioning, considering it was also said rabbits in general don't make many weapons.

Actually, the OG comic states that there is one rabbit blacksmith, of unequalled skill.

"You may have heard that rabbits don't forge swords, but that is not entirely true... there is one
And his craft(s)manship is unequaled"

When reading a non omnipresent and/or omniscient character's words, especially when they speak in totals, you have to take it with a grain of salt.

It specifies swords, perhaps in the sense of 'weapons', but not all metalworks. The simple fact that Turner's trousers has buckles can testify to that, though nothing states that it was entirely rabbit-made or that they don't import the metallic parts.

As the Overgrowth rap states: "Those are some broad generalizations, so don't be shocked if you find some aberrations."

As to the level of skill or mention worthy-ness of other blacksmiths, it's barely a matter lore-wise. If there's one blacksmith, there are sure to be others, hence: "(...) rabbit blacksmiths are not unheard of."

I have also heard, in one of the early art assets (number 16, I think) that Aubrey had already "finished" some of the following strips for the comic, but there have been no updates on the site since. Also, I suspect Turner is the blacksmith they talk about.

Turner is a martial arts expert not a blacksmith

If people can have more than one job, why not rabbits?

What makes you think it is Turner? Turner may not even be in the same locale/time as the comic.

It is very possible that it is not turner, I think it is not, but it is probably when turner is still alive, though he might be old. Doesn't have to be though, you are right about that.

Also, does Turner have a second name?(Turner could be his first or last name)

If not, I suggest Jimothy Turner.
