The Cosmic Unconsciousness

"A lot of people don't realize what's really going on. They view life as a bunch of unconnected incidences and things. They don't realize that there's this, like, lattice of coincidence that lays on top of everything... I'll give you an example, show you what I mean: Suppose you're thinking about a plate of shrimp. Suddenly, somebody'll say 'plate', or 'shrimp', or 'plate of shrimp' out of the blue, no explanation... No point in looking for one either... It's all part of the cosmic unconsciousness..."
-Miller, Repo Man (1984)

This post refers to some of the uncanny (almost unsettling) audio tapes found in Receiver, and their importance.

I've only heard maybe 5-6 out of the 11 audio tapes found in Receiver but the messages within are astounding given the fact that the ideas expressed are not uncommon, and in fact are normal sequences in certain topics: Psychonautics, Quantum-- and Theoretical Physics. Many literary and oratory persons, some well known like Michio Kaku, others less known like David Icke or Terrance McKenna, express some similar ideas of understanding in their work.

The Duality.
The concept is simple: Yourself consists of two separate entities. On one side, there is a dormant you, unaware of your surroundings or even your own presence. On the other side is a projected image of your conscious where you interact with other projections in a world you have collectively built together. Like The Matrix (1999).

The Awakening.
Because the true "self" is in an idle state, constantly projecting another self onto a plane, there must be circumstances for that self to wake. Death seems to be these circumstances. Receiver expresses the idea that humans have the ability to transcend this primordial form, and if even one of them accomplished this task, the rest of humanity would be set free.

Back track with me for a little talk on the dimension of time: The Fourth Dimension. Take Don Hertzfeldt's explanation... "The passing of time is just an illusion, because all of eternity is actually taking place all at once. The past never vanishes away and the future has already happened. All of history is fixed and laid out like an infinite landscape of simultaneous events that we simply happen to travel through in one direction."

Could you imagine an existence where you perceive time as one constant reality? What would it look like, or more importantly, would it even be a vision at all? Could we even try to comprehend that higher state of being with what we are equipped with now? But then, who even says that's the effect of being awakened?

What Any of This Means.
I'm very excited about this game. It's unique, it's fresh, it's frustrating... but it speaks! I've just got all these ideas swarming in my head, and feel like maybe writing it out and sharing it will help me piece them together with more coherence that what I've already done.
Technology is in an ever advancing pace, and there will come a time when our advances in technology become so rapid that it will force us to evolve and possibly see beyond the web of perception that has already been spun. Will that point be our awakening? I know not... but I hope so.

tl;dr - Receiver holds some eerily inspiring audio tapes that are not uncommon with some ideas of the perception of reality.

"...they lied to you, sold you ideas of good & evil, gave you distrust for your body & shame for your prophethood of chaos, invented words of disgust for your molecular love, mesmerized you with inattention, and bored you with civilization & all it's usurious emotions."
-Hakim Bey

TL;DR
But I get the gist. The tapes definitely got my brain going. I was about 4 hours into gameplay, just finding a few tapes and then dying, when I found the one mentioning the realities and then referencing the case in which a receiver hears the tape in a fictional setting and I almost pooped my pants a little.
It was really cool to find the tapes and get that metaphysical backstory going on. Really awesome story, for a game that on the surface has very little beyond the gun mechanics.

I prefer to see it as a cyberpunk fable, in which we are mind-slaved by the media, and Receiver acts as a cleartape intended to awaken the player while using a familiar form of media used to corrupt their mind in the first place.

Actually I think the note on the final screens is very much intended for the player themselves, at least in part.

Oh, and the music reminds me of Deus Ex 1.
