A few questions to the devs :)

Post by Toonarmy » Sun Sep 01, 2013 6:56 am

Hey so this game looks great I love the look of the physics and the fighting but I have no idea what this game is about or what features will be in and for $30 I would like a few questions answered by the devs before pre ordering :)
1 What is this game actual about? I didnt really see much of a description about the game sorry so i would like to know more about the game in general please :)
2 Is it an open world game please say yes that would be perfect for the fighting and physics would be amazing to go round starting fights with tons of other people
3 What features will this game have? for example will there be a massive world to explore if its open world or not, crafting, trading, different biomes and landscapes etc?
4 WIll there be other gamemodes than just the singleplayer? for example multiplayer and iv seen the arena mode that looks so fun is that just a test for the fighting or will that be a permanent mode once the game is fully releases but obviously with more work done to it so the arenas look better and there is more features for it to keep people interested like gaining gear/equipment gaining fanbase that has some impact on what happened or how well you can fight etc? I would love the arena to be a permanent mode within the final game but just more work on it and more features id probs pre order just for that as i could see myself playing that for hours on end as long as it had more to it and a more incentive to continue to play like leaderboards and gaining new gear/equipment etc and special events nd tht :)
5 Roughly how long are you aiming for the game to be?
6 Will the game have big replayability?
7 will there be some kind or random level generator to make the game have more replayability?
Thank you in advance for any info and answers you can give me devs :)

I'm a fan, not a developer. I've been around for a while though and can answer some of your questions.

The game is about kicking butt as a ninja rabbit.

The developers are staying silent about the story/campaign mode; all we have ATM is the Arena. The game is level-based, not open-world. Moving between levels might happen through an overworld map where you choose missions,.

The levels are big, but not open-world big. You can reach the end of an open map in minutes, at most. It's still big enough that you might not find the end unless you go looking for it. The levels won't be linear, so there will be some freedom e.g. you might have several ways to enter a fortress, but you can't choose to not enter the fortress. There will be no crafting, no trading - they haven't been mentioned even once, and they're MMO things rather than fighting game things.

There are different biomes and landscapes (deserts, hilly grasslands, plains, forests, snowy landscapes), but usually only one biome per level.

Online multiplayer is unlikely. VS on the same computer is already possible. There's the Arena mode. There have been some hints about a campaign/story mode, but the developers haven't said anything about that for a while. They have mentioned they don't want to spoil the story for the preorderers, which would explain the silence, but they haven't said if that's the case here.

The game has as much replayability as any challenging, skill-based game has. If you enjoy perfecting things, there's lots of it. If you don't, there's less. Arena mode and player-made parkour challenge maps will likely be most of the replayability factor.

Instantly-created random levels are impossible. Calculating the light and shadows takes too long for that. It takes several minutes to calculate the shadows and lighting, and that's the best case -on a worse computer and a complicated map it might take 30 minutes or so.
It should be possible to create some sort of randomizer script, but since it's not instant any way it would probably be easier to just mod in a new level on your own, or download a level made by a modder.

At first, i like to say, that i am not a developer of this game, so never take this as a pure cold.

No, this game will probably be level based, but don't worry the levels are large.
3 What features will this game have? for example will there be a massive world to explore if its open world or not, crafting, trading, different biomes and landscapes etc?
I can't say anything about crafting, there may be some sort of trading system because the devs have made some props for stores http://blog.wolfire.com/2011/07/Art-Asset-Overview-18and he's mentioning store stalls outside the arena in this blog post
different biomes and landscapes- there are already some seasonal maps made by dev's out there
4 WIll there be other gamemodes than just the singleplayer? for example multiplayer and iv seen the arena mode that looks so fun is that just a test for the fighting or will that be a permanent mode once the game is fully releases but obviously with more work done to it so the arenas look better and there is more features for it to keep people interested like gaining gear/equipment gaining fanbase that has some impact on what happened or how well you can fight etc? There is no other multiplayer modes announced/ made other than local splitscreen or Versus mode, but who knows what they may come up with in the future.
As you can see in the blog posts that i give you links that the arena mode will be part of the game.
Currently in the arena mode you can gain fanbase- it works as a score, but it is work in progress.
6 Will the game have big replayability?
It highly depends on your computer skill and what can you do. The game have built in level editor. This means that you can create single levels that can be arenas, or single player/ co-op/ Versus.
When you decide that there isn't the right building block for your level you can always make one as long as you are willing to learn some simple 3D modeling, texturing and read / watch some tutorials that are made by other community members.
Now when you decide that you don't like to play as default characters you can make yourself a character model as long as you know how to (tutorials will be made either by dev's or by community members). Even at right now there are many custom characters out there that are made by community. You can even make custom animations when you like to have some.
Now when you know something about programming then you can create custom scripts that can change pretty much anything in the game, starting with custom shaders/effects to mod's like flying mod
7 will there be some kind or random level generator to make the game have more replayability?
Who knows.

You should really try out the demo of Lugaru, you'll get a very good idea of what Overgrowth is like. It's basically the same idea, but with a LOT more features, better graphics, better everything.

Just one word of caution:
The combat of Lugaru plays nothing like the one of Overgrowth. It was actually one of the reasons why I didn't get Lugaru back in the day. Overgrowth is much more fluid and intuitive.

In Alpha 201 update, one of the added features is Initial progress on dialogue system.

This hints at some sort of story mode. Yay!
