Would that be, a zone system, where you can freely wander the world, but have to do quests to fulfil objectives.
Or would it be the capability to move between levels as you like.
Kind of Fable-esque.
To clear up your confusion:

A 'zone' system is most certainly not a free-roaming world, by any stretch of the imagination. Zone-based systems, such as GTA, are - by definition - linear!

And a free-roaming world has no 'levels', so to speak, whether you can move freely between them or not.

No, a free-roaming world is exactly as it sounds. You can go wherever you want, whenever you want. You don't need to do any quests, in fact you don't need to do anything. You can walk to the place where the very last scene of the game occurs, straight off the bat. There's no restrictions, no quests that you must do to advance to the next stage, and there's (generally) no compulsion to follow the main storyline at all.

If you're still confused, you should be able to pick up a copy of Morrowind cheap. Play it and you'll see exactly what I mean.

When you go really deep into free-roaming territory. You eventually hit the level of fl0w.

unfortunately, that game is really boring.

Zu-wah? Forgive my ignorance, but wtf is fl0w?

Yeah, Morrowind can get really tedious after a while... that's why I got the PC version. Mods are sweet.

It is an experimental flash game that was later ported to PS3.

Whoa...

Now that's some free-roaming!

But in most free-roaming games you generally have to contend with natural obstacles, such as mountains. They don't necessarily stop you going where you want to, but they can make it hard to just beeline from one point to another.

Especially since Lugaru is an island and if you went far enough in one direction, you would eventually reach the sea.

On that game I beat the first part where you're the little swimming thing with the pincer. I beat the boss and evolved into the next type of creature, and was about halfway through that and then accidentally clicked one of the buttons on the screen. Progress was lost. Lol.

FlOw's idea is great, it's just not got the pure awesomeness to back up the free roaming and dynamic difficulty thingy…

I got to the point where it's pitch black and your creature has about 10 rows of spikey things down his sides. I couldn't find the red bug to go down though, there was no red pulse either to help me look for it :(

That's the deepest level. You're supposed to kill the other thingy in that level and then go on to the next stage. I got that far, but I didn't see the point in doing it all over again with a different shaped creature.

I got to the end of the game after all the creatures... it was pretty easy, but slow.
