I don't really know much about Macs, but that sounds to me like plenty of power to run a game like Overgrowth.

By any chance will this game run smoothly with a 2.8GHz, 4g ram, Radeon X1950 CrossFire edition graphics card?

Yes. I'm running the alpha on a much older macbook pro with comparably low stats, so far the alphas run fine most of the time.

There is sometimes lag when badly optimized features are implemented and with large amounts of certain objects or effects, but I believe this isn't a hardware problem but a matter of optimization process, I have had roughly the same amounts of lag on machines with very different specs, indicating the hardware power isn't always the major issue.

Of course, some decked out monsters will already be able to play the game with any number of objects and lack of optimization without lag, but I think the idea is that the final product should run fine on most modern rigs. Being an indie game the target audience should include many people with low end computers not primarily built for gaming.

When I preordered many years ago I ran the alpha on an imac with 1gb ram and x1600 graphic card, which was a good machine back then, and that machine can still run the alpha ok on levels with few objects and effects turned off.

Overgrowth uses OpenGL, and not DirectX, so that is not an easily answerable question. Do you know model of GPU you have?

According to me, Overgrowth doesnt have that much serious system requirements, i play Overgrowth on my old computer, and works like a charm, however, spawning too much NPCs will cause FPS drop, dont know if its me or the game itself.

heres my old system:
Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit OS
2 GB RAM
Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5200 @ 2.50GHz 2.50GHz
AMD Radeon HD 6500 Series

Most likely because - believe it or not - there is more than one slower computer and they can't test it on all of them. There's a reason why most triple A titles are usually shipped to Nvidia or AMD before release to get optimised for those companies' GPU types and drivers. I wouldn't expect too much in regards to optimisation as long as the game is still in alpha.
