Companies usually gives free games when they celebrate something, like they did for Command & Conquer, GTA 1&2, TES: Arena and TES: Daggerfall recently (I'm sure I missed a lot). In those case, they were old games, not new ones.
But that would hurt big time if they give away a game that have being released recently and even more when they haven't finished the game yet. Contest, maybe (and It was already done before), but never an open free game give away. 30$ is a very good price compared to the usual 50-60$ starting price for most games these days.
