More trees!

Post by David » Fri Apr 28, 2006 2:58 pm

I worked on trees more today, and made another blog post about them: http://blog.wolfire.com/

Looks good to me!

Are you already testing it regarding performance with multiple trees?

Yes, I just added a couple screenshots of larger groups of trees. It runs fine with 100 trees, but I am going to add better LOD to support large forests.

Runs fine with 100 trees! See? It's way better than speedtree already! :P
That's amazing! I don't even know what LOD is but I'm stoked. Better support by David means best support in the world.

I could be overhyping, but I've been currently underhyping things! I had no idea trees could be this good!

It's an abbreviation for Level of Detail.

They're just trees. There are much more appealing features of the game that have been noted. I mean, they look great, they're very well done, they're going to look sweet in-game and I like the idea of growing vegetation as much as the next guy, but they're trees.

Tell us, how many trees can SpeedTree handle at one time? At the same quality level as david's system.

Umm, uhh... Maybe, I dunno 15? (never seen more than that upclose at a time. Never seen more than 2 upclose in Oblivion)
I think you have to be like 65 feet away before you start getting a huge graphics change where everything turns to sprites. And I think that David's trees had pretty much the same level of detail as the ones farther away, I don't know how much change was put into the different LODs for the trees, but it looked like they all had the same detail levels.

But yeah, Speedtree handles like a thousand trees so... man I hate those trees, so damn uninteractive. I want to chop them down!
Fake bastards
