How do I mod things?

Post by Foogooman » Sat Jan 06, 2007 11:32 pm

The models are in "solid" format, which I don't know how to open. Also, the skeletons are just in "file" format. How can I mod the weapons and such? I want to make a large sword.

Well atleast I now know it's possible, but how is it done?

Also, is the swing range bigger? Does it actually affect things outside of the normal sword range. Are the cuts on the enemy bigger? Can that be done? Can you release your large sword?

Check the wiki if you want to learn how to mod Lugaru.

If you only want to mod things that nobody can mod yet, then I can't help you.

Oi, who says you can't change the skeleton files or other files? You just need to know what to change and how to change it.

Also, you just made the 500th topic in the Lugaru forum! Hooray!

Looks like a pretty good range, and they sure look dangerous.

But seriously, sorry about pulling your leg. This is really an example of what happens when you replace the staff with the sword in the data file. It may look cool, but it acts like a staff.

I would kinda like to see a thread about the various mods people have come up with and how they did it; it'd be nice to have it all in one place and then put it in the Wiki.

But, briefly, here's what I've learned about modding:
- Clothes - Easy; just replace the various clothing files in the folder. There's some distortion around the shoulders, but it's easily accomodated.
- Skins - Relatively easy; just make your own and replace a file.
- Knives - Relatively easy; replace the texture with your own. There's some distortion (the texture is stretched ingame) and your max size is limited to the existing knife.
- Swords - Texture is relatively easy, but quirky. There's some distortion in the pommel, grip, and quillion. Size and shape: difficult; there's a work-around, but it is a little odd and causes some problems with the bloody versions. You're again limited by the size and shape of the existing sword.
- Staffs - Similar to sword; texture is easy, although there is some wrapping that distorts it ingame, so trial and error is probably the best approach here. Size; similar to sword, with its own quirks. There have been some interesting ones shown here, but you're back to the limitation of the size of the original one.
- .solids - Impossible for me to manipulate; David (the game developer) no longer has the editing file; Nayr says he has cracked it...

I can :). I wrote a program to convert various triangle files (i.e. 3ds, triangle-ized objs, etc.) into .solid files. I wasn't much of a modeler, so I never did anything with it.
...but has yet to share his apps or methods.

I've got a number of different skins, and whole sets of weapons, which I'd be glad to show off and share if anyone is interested in a modding thread like this. At least it's something to do until L2 comes out.

If I had a Maya plugin for .solid file formats, then I'd be able to smoothen out all the models and make it more realistic :D , and I'd make a robot Turner (not just by changing the texture, but by remodeling Turner). That would be awesome. I'm going to try that in L2 if David is kind enough to give me the animation app :P .

This forum is like a Marx Brother's movie: a paradigm of divergent thinking.

Chico: "I think the stolen jewelry is in the house next door."
Groucho: "There is no house next door."
Chico: "Then we'll build one!"
Harpo: "Honk!"

Or maybe more like the joke about AD/HDs:
Q - How many AD/HDs does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
A - "Look! A chicken!"

Usagi: "Let's have a thread about..."
NickD: "If I had something I don't have, to work with something that doesn't exist, then I'd do lots of cool stuff like...
Colicedus: "Honk!"

Sorry C; did I offend you? If I did, I'm sorry. I didn't intend to.

I just think it's hilarious how the random ideas, comments, and ideas fly around in every direction.

You can hardly tell one thread from another. Any particular topic will have 7 or 8 random comments and replies, to 1 that's apropos to the thread.

But that's cool. Most creative people tend to be divergent thinkers, and the Marx brothers were masters. That's why they're so hilarious.

And, Harpo did have curly blonde hair...
