Okay.
Welcome V|P :)
SWF progress bar would be unpractical, and fake (how could it show the
actual progress of loading the game?)
Phoenix UI is, indeed, the best UI engine yet.
It just needs a makeover so Jeff doesn't get sued by Apple :p
I wouldn't mind if it was simple with just some pretty colors (like my
web design is, because I don't have any Photoshop skillz).
If you're going to make it more advanced and themed, you better make it
really good! I have a few designs and backgrounds in my head, especially for the main menu. As I've said earlier somewhere, I really liked HL2s menu,
so a bit of what I'm thinking is like HL2s in-game-engine menu backgrounds,
but Lugaru-themed.

The pics for menu options, background, title, progress screen are all in Lugaru/Data/Textures/, V|P. You can easily replace them with your own.

Also eating breakfast. Pass the orange juice?

I've replaced all mine several times, as well as renaming all the sites on the map.

I don't claim they're even worth sharing; I like some of 'em, some are dumb, some are ugly, mostly they don't turn out the way I expected.

I'm always up for some new images on this forum; with the exception of certain threads, I'm more interested in pictures than reading. So if a WSF noob shows up, I'd say

Image Image
And if they claim they have better images, then I say, Oh Boy! Image Let's see your stuff.

And if he produces something cool, then I'd say Image

and maybe even

Image that's amazing.

But if he only talks about his skills, I'd say he can just

Image

because he's obviously just one of those

Image

and if so, then

Image

I'm out of coffee; any left in the pot? (This comment is obviously out of date now; it's almost dinner!)

Well, my links are fixed, (now I know what Photobucket meant with the warning "If you move these images into a new folder, all direct links will be broken." Doh!) but I still feel stronge and broken inside. I wish now that I had some of that stronge black coffee Crill3 serves.

Thanks for the new graphic, r_i; I like the tagline. But how do you think it would look as an avatar?

Not so good? It's just the icon for 'image link points to 404' in Firefox.

I highly doubt that they use Flash for their menu screens. If you want, I can embelish your menu screens with some actionscript skills of mine :D .

Ok first of all, those of you who curteosly welcomed me, thank you. Those of you who want to flame, notice I said I wan't trying to be rude in my first post. And I don't know much about game design and stuff, which is why I specifically mentioned I'm good with photoshop, etc not game design. Next, even if SOME of you say that you don't give smack about what the menu looks like as long as the game is good, that's because you've played the game and like it. I know when I first tried the game, looking at the menu was sort of a red button and I didn't even want to try it, but I did anyway and liked the game, which is why I'm here. All I'm trying to do is give it a nice cover so that those who do judge a book by it's cover don't run away from it. And even if my menu sucked, I think it would be better than that, again, not being rude, because I know David (I think that's the developer, right?) probably put more time and attention into the game itself. So flamers, think before you mouth off.

Anyway, I don't have any work to show you atm, but check out my Devaint for something I did a few months ago. (I've been fking around with C4D and Photoshop for the past 6-8 months only).

Here's some Flash tutorials I did for my buddy's site.

Don't believe that's mine, check the AIM, MSN and Yahoo screen names, they're the same, and if you still don't believe, register and ask the admins (that would be me ha!).

I don't think anyone was trying to flame you. By all means, go ahead, design a new menu.

V|P wrote:... I've been playing Lugaru for a while now, and I love the game...I've noticed that all your games have well, sort of a crappy menu/load screen (not being rude or anything).
This is contradictory, V|P. You can't make something not rude by saying, "I'm not being rude." Not being rude would be saying, "The menu doesn't seem as polished as the rest of the game." But rude is rude, and that's what you were.
V|P wrote:This is sort of surprising since the rest of the game seems to be made by pros.
This is sort of surprising from someone who just said "not being rude or anything." You've just told someone, who by the time he was 18 was the only developer to win in the first three uDevGame contests, and had coded and distributed not one, not two, not even just three excellent games (they aren't all on the Wolfire site anymore) that his menu looks unprofessional.
V|P wrote:Anyway, I'm really good at Cinema 4D, Photoshop, and Flash, so if you guys want better menus/load screens....
After what preceded it, this seems a mite arrogant.
V|P wrote:Those of you who want to flame, notice I said I wan't trying to be rude in my first post.
See above. This is like saying "God, are you ever thin-skinned'" after you insult someone. Stop shifting blame.
V|P wrote: And I don't know much about game design and stuff, which is why I specifically mentioned I'm good with photoshop, etc not game design.
You specifically claimed you could do better
when you wrote:so if you guys want better menus/load screens....
V|P wrote:...even if my menu sucked, I think it would be better than that, again, not being rude...
Unbelievable! "Your menu is worse than the suxxor, but don't be insulted."
V|P wrote:... because I know David (I think that's the developer, right?)
You don't know enough to be sure who the developer is, but you know you can do better menus. And you don't think this is insulting?
V|P wrote: So flamers, think before you mouth off.
Words to the wise, V|P: you should follow them. And this ain't flamin', but it could get there quickly.

Ever walk into a martial arts dojo [sorry, Silb: the shark in me just won't be restrained] and try to insult or challenge the Master? If not, I'll tell you what happens: you run head-first into a phalanx of very angry senior students.

The master doesn't need their protection, 'cuz he's better than they are, but he sure as hell doesn't deserve to be insulted by any noob off the street.

No, this isn't a dojo, David's not our master, etc., etc., but he sure as hell doesn't deserve to be insulted by any noob off the street.

So, Welcome to the Wolfire Software Forum. You've met some of the senior students, and made a wonderful first impression. Your Deviantart stuff looks nice. Let's see your menus.

Yah; I know. But it was funny.

Wow, my god Usagi you threw so much stuff into his mouth... you know just looking back at his posts again, they really don't seem that bad until after you read your paragrah dissection, quote, reply, quote, reply, quote, reply. You scold him for being rude when saying, "not trying to be rude," and then you totally dis him for like half a page and say, I'm not flaming.

I've seen threads that were rude before, but I really don't think this is one of them. I mean, you don't really need to defend the menu this much because, David himself admits that the menu is not where this game is shining in, so, I really don't think it's a big deal if someone says he can do a better job. David could easily do a better job too.

Well, you may be right. I still don't consider it flaming, since I tried to avoid phrases like "watch your mouth," but if it offended you, I apologize.

And if everyone else feels the same as you do, then I apologize to them too. I guess we have a different attitude towards this kind of stuff.

I have an aversion to people who say, "No offense, man," or "Just joking!" Your communication should be clear enough without that.

The only reason I can think of to say it is if you yourself think you are being insulting, or if you know your meaning wasn't clear. So, why not just make it clear, and not make excuses?

Bah! More talk. Just post an image, VpipeP; then we'll have something to talk about.
