SOS+Lugaru=Shiny Bunnies?

Post by »StaffShock« » Sun Feb 25, 2007 12:18 pm

From what I've seen between SOS and Lugaru, they seem to share the same engine. (Though this has been said as well.) Doesn't this mean that Lugaru supports cubemapped models?

That would open up so many new possibilities. You could cubemap the blocks and have a metal world, or do it to T, to give the impression of a fully armored warrior.

Any insight? Is this possible, or even worth it?

I don't get what you mean exactly, but I know that SOS models can't be used in Lugaru and vice versa.

Well, Lugaru and SOS use the same engine, don't they? So this could mean that some of the things supported in SOS are supported in Lugaru. If not cupemapping, maybe something else.

Edit: I realize that David probably spiffed it up a bit, but it could still happen, right?right?I want shiny rocks and blocks and bunnies!

If you're talking about just changing the colors of things in-game, you could easily replace textures.

@zat: A cubemap is when you apply a certain kind of texture that acts as faux specularity. An object with a cubemap appears shiny when it really just has a specially treated texture over it that moves to stay oriented to its original position.

In this picture, the chief's visor looks shiny because of the cubemap applied onto it.

In SOS, the robots had a cubemap on them to make them seem shiny.

It would be cool to see this on some stuff in Lugaru.

@Crill: The file is still up; It's hosted at http://www.wolfire.com/SOS.sit;I'm downloading it right now. :D

You're talking about cubic reflection mapping. Cube mapping itself is just mapping textures onto the surface of a cube. Cubic reflection mapping is mapping textures onto the surface of a cube and taking the result as a reference value for orthogonal light rays.

They must have fixed it, I bet temple works too now (don't have time to check).

Hmmm... Yeah, you're right, I don't really know what I'm talking about, but I do know that this is what David used to make the robots look reflective. Dang, I hope...

Edit: Lol crill, you stole my spot :D You posted while I was posting.

Are you kidding?
I just answered your question 2 hours ago in the temples thread,
and it seems like you read it.

I accidentally asked this in two topics, I posted both before you answered.

I don't see why you couldn't replace the robot model with the rabbit model though, but you'd get some weird textures though for that model. It'd work well in a mod though!

I've tried that, think Lugaru just crashes when you load a level or something.

No. We beta testers had a bunch of trouble with the lugaru updates, because the old maps became incompatible between different versions (and SOS was branched reallly early on.)
