Nuky's Map and Mod blog!

Post by Nuky » Fri Apr 27, 2007 3:46 pm

Okay, so here I shall spam the forum with my creations. Finally.
I can't promise I'll keep this thread up-bump'd alot, seeing as school and private-project life is pretty hectic, but I'll do my best in geting stuff made. Quality, I don't know yet.

<SOLVED!> Anyways.
I'm about to post my first "playable" map here. Only thing keeping me, is that the dialogue file is not accepted by lugaru for some reason. I've read the wiki, and I know of the 10/13-letter bug etc., and I'm sure it's a clean .txt, pretty much like the example. All that happens is that two of four of the dialogues show up in the dialogue/camera editing mode... and they're blank. As soon as this is fixed, I'll post it. A simple map, yet challenging and tactically mindnumbing (not really).
Thanks!

The format is good.

Possible problem: on Mac at least all line breaks have to be ascii 13 in order to be read by Lugaru, and not 10. Most text editors won't display the difference, and I can't tell if that is your problem because you copy-pasted the text (losing some ascii information in the process) instead of uploading the file.

Test: here is your dialogue with ascii 13 line breaks. Try the file (don't copy-paste anything, use the file as is). Does it work?

(Anyone knows a free file upload site that doesn't have that many obnoxious ads?)

I tried copy/pasting the "square-endlines" (you know... where endlines are replaced by a square) and replacing the windows ones before posting... (Actually, I think I posted the version with the squares in the forum, cause of lazyness). What I CAN do, though... is to rewrite it on my mac, if that helps.

In fact, I'll try yours first.

*boopoop-doop-oopoop-oop!*
Nope. Still nothing. Thanks. =)
Mac-time.

Speaking of a mod... I have a song I made for no aparent reason :P and if fits the Lugaru category. Anybody want to hear? And Nucky could use it in his zip file after he's done :D .

I tried implementing dialogue on my PC and it bugged the maps out. Eventually I just created the maps and wrote the dialogue on my PC and then added the dialogue on my Mac.

NickD, go ahead. I'd love you hear mod-music. =)
If I make a mod, I'll probably make my own music, though. Cause it's fun, and cause I don't like copyright infringement =P

Wormguy; I'll probably have to do that myself too... Seems like it might be a PC-only problem. I'll post the results when I can get around to trying it out.

Seems I had to do like mr. Wormguy, and do the dialogue-implementing on OSX. Well, it's solved now.

And as I promised you, I give you my own little lugaru file-haven:
Nuky's Lugaru files!
Don't bother to look at anything else. Especially not the main-page, as I was bored and needed an excuse to update the site as soon as possible.

And if you're a noob; don't forget to read the README, kthx.

Currently, the only map on there is nukbridgeconstruction. I was experimenting around, trying to make a proper map for the first time. And see how stuff really worked. I found out that as long as you make sure you're not joking too much around, and that you save backups every now and then (many, if needed), you're likely to make something playable at least.

It's a relatively simple map. Didn't give it any decor, but it can be challenging; and there's a little trick to doing it almost flawlessly.

Feedback is always nice. Thanks for all the help with the dialogues.

Enjoy! =)

Nice! :)

The bridge looks good. Edges are well aligned in spite of how tricky that can be.

Maybe you should make some enemies move, because otherwise it's tempting to just spinecrush everyone.

Btw, you don't need to include the dialogue file. It's loaded into the map file when you use the dialogue command.

Hmm, I thought so too, but after that Temple mod, my dialogue folder got filled with dialogue files. I forgot to experiment about that myself. =)

Anyways, thanks for the compliment =D
I'll make sure that's not the last you see of me ;D

Also, I should stop spamming my own thread. <.<;

Nice work!

I'll have to get back to making my maps. I had about 5 or 6 practically done for my campaign with dialogue, and I just never got around to finalizing anything. School took over, and now I'm working on my own original game :). Maybe I'll finish it in the summer when I have time.

Thank you for reminding me that implementing dialogue is indeed possible.

Can't wait to see what you got in wait for us =)

I'm thinking of a total conversion campaign myself too.
I'm also making a world overview of how I think the Lugaru Island would look. I got turner's village and some of the rocky ready. Don't think it will be any point in uploading it, though =P
Won't be done with it even, probably.

There seems to be some difficulty around the ends of the bridge. Raiders are getting stuck in the rock just behind any pillar, and framerate drops to imperceptible levels.

Sometimes this happens when blocks intersect in strange ways. You may want to check that out.

Yeah, I know of the framerate issue, but... I don't think there's anything I can do about that, to be honest. At least not now, as the mapeditor isn't exactly a creative point-and-click adventure =P

I'm in the middle of a test spanning several days now, though, so no updates. :(
