We'll send the ninjas to deal with that.

And then robots to deal with the ninjas.

Then the robots will probably just kill eachother.

We've got some good ideas on how to minimize piracy.

I've been noticing a lot of new accounts within the past weeks. Hopefully these are people who have heard about Overgrowth?

That sounds good. It'd be excellent if you guys'd really get 100% profits off this, 'cause you really do deserve it =D

Here's one of them from a maybe over-eager fan; assuming Overgrowth will be registered to full-version by a reg key, there's a special program used by some companies like Datarealms (can explain this more thoroughly through PM's if it sounds good)- You purchase a certain key under whatever name you want. The accepted key is added to a database of registered keys. But, here's the thing. Whenever you open up the game, it automatically registers through internet accsess- if the same key is being used in another computer, it is impossible to register with it. Even if the owner isn't using the program, the game stays registered to their copy of the game until they choose the option of deactivating it to maybe switch it to another computer. The threat of theft is nigh impossible, and the usual pirating sites won't bother buying separate keys because of the huge cost. As you'd need to basically become a stalker/hacker to actually steal someone's key, you'd have maybe 20 minutes of registered play time- until that guy realizes his key has been stolen, at which point he contacts the owner with his purchase information and gets a whole separate key, whereas the other key is deactivated. It's really not worth the effort of avoiding 20-40$ of payment for something =P

Key-based systems that use phone-home systems generally have keygen programs written for them instead of a list of known-good keys, precisely because of the problems you outlined. Or alternatively, the pirated version has been cracked to not phone home.

Heh, it's funny -- a lot of very well-paid people spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to prevent piracy, and as soon as their product gets released, even more people who aren't being paid at all spend a very small amount of time figuring out how to pirate the software in question. It's a very unbalanced conflict.

Personally, I'd prefer if the anti-piracy measures aren't too intrusive. A combination of not being able to download the entire game content without registering, with needing a key to make use of that content and any expansions, strikes an ideal balance in my mind. Mainly I say this because Lugaru/Overgrowth will be heavily dependent on word-of-mouth for advertising, and nothing kills good word-of-mouth more quickly than overly-intrusive antipiracy measures. It's important that the game not be trivial to pirate, but it's also important to not treat your real customers like criminals.
