That's true, but you never know what could happen years from now. He could decide not to finish the multiplayer and release the game without it, depending on what's going on with his life. The earlier games have the chat function after all.Count Roland wrote:well um http://wolfire.com/blog/category/lugaru-2/ second topic.

I see this as a good thing.
While fan games are nice, you always have to restrict yourself creatively and they're never really "yours". They're never really anyone's. Making an original game with a unique concept that other people will want to make fan games out of will probably give you more satisfaction in the end.
Besides, noone said that you can't be inspired by the game and make your game in the spirit of it. Your game can still have anthropomorphic animals, or whatever it is that you like the most about Lugaru. Great artists/developers are inspired by other works all the time and you can definitely see it in their work. Try the Braid demo sometime.
While it is bumming out that you're unable to finish your fan game because your team members didn't know that you can't make money off it (
), it certainly isn't the end of the world and you could probably still use many of the concepts you thought up of. The first thing you should probably change is the name/s.
Seriously, go original. It's awesome.
