This is very true, i still think that first katana i made was crap, but ah hell, everyone liked it. (i thinks) also, i would suggest using Blender if you are using something else, it's just as powerful as most of the commercial 3D modeling packages out there, and the only tutorials for Lugaru models are written for Blender. Blender is better to use for lugaru because Lugaru models must be completely made of squares, and Blender's default mech is a cube. (dont know how any of this is relevant anymore, but oh well...)

I've got blender, but I'm rubbish at it, it's too complicated, but I can make models in SU and import them into blender.
