How do I get to the top on the first stage? I have been crouch-jumping my way, but I seem to have no luck.

Crouch, start creeping forward a little, then without releasing shift, jump. You'll go sailing forward and (hopefully) toward the next rock. Keep practicing and you'll get it!

Not jumping high enough. I have read the crouch-jump, but it seemed that I never jumped high enough.

Hold down space longer to jump higher. Tapping it will only make you sail forward a half-meter or so.

Also, you do not need to get on top of the rock, you can talk to to the NPC who the character at top indicates and trigger the event without ever consulting her. (At least I could.)

Sometimes, even crouch-jumping doesnt get you high enough. So get Turner to grab the edge (via crouch-jump) of the next rock and then climb up.
Or if all else fails, try setting Floating Jump=1 in config.txt and just hold down the spacebar.
