Mouse movement troubles in Lugaru

Post by Viking Zippy » Sun Aug 02, 2009 5:25 pm

After having virtually no problems whatsoever in Lugaru on the Mac for the past few years (or at least, none that were unfixable), an extremely frustrating one cropped up just today: if I move the mouse any faster than a crawl, movement ceases entirely. If I move it very, very slowly, I can look around fine, but as soon as I need to turn and look fast, the movement completely freezes up.

After troubleshooting for quite some time (uninstalling, reinstalling, swapping USB Overdrive — which I've been trying recently — for SteerMouse — which I bought some time ago) I realized I I hadn't played Lugaru since installing 10.5.7.

So, I tried Lugaru on three other Macs in the house that also have 10.5.7 (this is a Power Mac G5, the other is a Power Mac G4, and the third one of the older white MacBooks), and the problem persists. I also asked a fellow Overgrowth preorderer (Modfox, who you may have seen in the SPF) if he had any problems, and he does as well, though he's on one of the more recent iMacs with Intel, running 10.5.7.

As I mentioned, I'd never had this problem before 10.5.7, and seeing as how the problem is identical on two Power Macs and similar — albeit more difficult to trigger — on an iMac and MacBook, the problem is probably widespread.

So, my question is directed at the Mac users: have any of you with 10.5.7 had any trouble with mouse movement when looking / turning with any kind of speed?

Thanks,

— VZ

Hmm, I'm on a 10.5.7 Intel MacBook and there are no problems like that. However, currently, I'm not using a mouse, just the trackpad.

*5 minutes later*

After plugging in a "Mighty Mouse" from the family computer and playing Lugaru with it, there still is no problems. So this is very odd.

Sorry, I'm no help. But good luck.

This is very odd. I tried the Apple mouse (one of the really old white single-button mice) on both the white MacBook and my brother's MacBook Pro, and the bug is very apparent — if not worse — on the Pro than on the G5, but just barely noticeable on the MacBook, so subtle that it shows for only a fraction of a second, and only when the mouse is moving extremely fast.

I tested it just now on my brother's MacBook Pro with a fresh copy of Lugaru, though, and the problem is the same, so I know it's not just my G5 or my Lugaru folder.

Thanks for testing it though, Untadaike.

do you have immediate mode turned on? hahah I've always wondered what the use of that thing is because I remembered always seeing the immediate mode (turn on on G5) thing. I'm not even sure that's what it's called but still.

I've had that on for years with no adverse effects (which makes sense, as I'm on a G5 :P), but I tried turning it off and on, and the results are the same.

However, I did find something interesting: the lower the resolution is, the more apparent the bug. My native res is 2560x1600, and when I play at that, it's very difficult to trigger the movement problem, but on 1280x800, it's horribly apparent.

So, if any of you Mac users out there would like to test it, try lowering the resolution to something smaller than your native size, and see if it happens.

Zippy, this wednesday's 10.5.8 Mac update may fix the problem, if that problem was in anyway connected to bluetooth stuff. Here's a CNN article talking about what they've improved. But I dunno. I hope it does anyway: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-10304293-37.html
