Is it deliberate that there is no way to save a game and no way to tell how "healthy" you or the other guys are?

The game is "saved" when you advance to the next area. I don't think it saves in the demo.
Your character's condition is your "health bar" in a sense. If he's all bloody and scraped up, then he's probably pretty hurt. If he's holding a wound in his chest, or slumping a bit, he's probably quite injured. If you're seeing blurred images, then you probably should retreat and recover for a moment.

standing slowly heals blunt wounds like kicks or staffs, but slices and stab wounds from knifes and swords are permanent. running slows the healing process.

Yeesh. Having a health bar would ruin the feel of Lugaru.

I agree! It makes the game a little more realistic.

I also agree. A health bar or any other type of hud would ruin the feel of the gameplay. The map is good though, since you can hardly notice it. But if you have it on insane there is nothing, which feels pretty realistic.

The word you guys are looking for is "immersion". If there are elements about the game which takes away the feeling that the player is doing what the character is doing, then that ruins the immersion. You should feel like the things you are doing in the game are actually happening to you, or at least just a little bit.
