Misplaced vertices

Post by heatsink » Thu Sep 22, 2005 10:54 pm

I just downloaded the demo version of Lugaru linux. The gameplay is fun. But aside from getting segfaults during fights, I see frequent flicker. In some frames, everything is where it's supposed to be, while in others several vertices are placed erratically and the affected polygons obstruct the view. It looks like they're always Turner's vertices, though I could be mistaken on that.

What could I try to diagnose the issue?

ATI Radeon 9200SE, ATI drivers, kernel 2.6.7, debian linux. I tried using the debian version of libsdl and openal with the same results.

What detail settings are you running, do you have blood on?

It doesn't matter as far as I can tell. It happens with detail low or high, blood off, blur off, decals off.

If it's segfaulting then Lugaru is having serious memory problems, and thats probably why the vertices are getting corrupted also, contact David or the Linux maintainer.

I'll try to get in touch.

Bafflingly, things render correctly when I take a screenshot. But I can capture the corrupted image with a digital camera. Take that, MPAA!

I think that happened to me; You have to reinstall.

Looks ATI-related. I used to have all sorts of similar problems with games on ATI cards running on Linux when they used GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object.

However, I've found that many Linux game ports (including those by some rather reputable coders) are so nVidia-centric that VBO breaks between nVidia driver updates. So I can't say it's *completely* an ATI issue in this case. It's just that someone probably coded it around nVidia hardware. Anyone else try tunning Lugaru on Linux with ATI hardware yet, so that we may validate this?

Is that a CRT monitor I'm looking at? Those things still exist?
Heh. Just kiddin'.
Curious - what happens when you have Turner walk around?

I'm running lugaru on linux with an ati card and have no problems. I am using the newest drivers now (8.16.20?) but don't think I had any problems with 8.14.13

I have version 3.9.0. That could be the problem.

When Turner walks around, the funny looking vertices move around. Sometimes everything is in place. Sometimes some other polygon gets skewed.

Old driver problems had their fair share of problems. The ati linux drivers are still very slow (especially compared with nvidia drivers), but the graphical glitches are mostly solved. So I'd suggest upgrading the drivers.

I'm having the same problem. There seems to be less flicker on lower graphic detail, but it's still annoying.

I hate that problem, just could never describe it before. I have the exact (almost) same problem with black and white 2 and some other games. So far I've found nothing to fix it either.

I get problems on other games apart from lugaru and I've got an Nvida 6600 Gt and updating drivers doesnt fix it. I hope that helps in some way...

Edit: Great! I just download AA: Special Forces and it still has the same problem! I wish someone could help.... that was a 900mb game, what a waste...
