The Man From Earth

Post by Dudeman » Wed Apr 07, 2010 8:37 pm

I found this while browsing netflix instants, and it it a very, very good movie. The entire thing is a conversation, never changing setting. It's very thought provoking and interesting, even though there is no action (except for a little at the end) I found myself captivated, unable to turn away from the screen. Anyways, I'll post the Netflix summary, and a few user reviews.

Netflix Summary:

Renowned sci-fi writer Jerome Bixby penned the script for this thought-provoking film starring David Lee Smith as John Oldman, a college professor who reveals to his colleagues that he's actually a centuries-old caveman. And so begins a captivating philosophical meditation on immortality, the last work from screenwriter Bixby, who earned career accolades for his contributions to such genre-defining shows as "Star Trek" and "The Twilight Zone."

User Reviews:

"'The Man From Earth' is equal parts sci-fi and equal parts psychological study. Listening to John Oldman's tale is fascinating, but the heart of the film is the effect it has on his listeners. Do they go along for the ride? Are they angry? Are they offended? Are they scared? How would you react if you were in that room? How would the story Oldman tells change your life? Is he telling the truth? Is he cruel or just crazy? Whether you're into his incredible story or whether you side with one of his friends or whether you love a mystery, people looking for an original movie with intelligent discussions no explosions will find the 90 minutes well spent."
4/5

"Every once in a while, it pays to just sit back and enjoy a movie without mindless action and special effects. Man from Earth more then makes up for this with a great story exploring the possibility of a prehistoric man surviving until the present time. It makes you think, question and maybe even believe. I would warn that it touches on some things that may offend devout Christians, so please watch with an open mind and remember this is entertainment so be entertained."
5/5

For being a third degree black belt, Harry doesn't do much other than hug people.

And play charades. Granted though he is very good at both.

My one problem with the movie is: If john doesn't age, he shouldn't be as old looking as he is. If he doesn't age he never would have grown past the physical look of a new born baby.

Interesting. I think I may actually watch that. And while I watch that, you should watch this fucked up piece of work starring Helen Mirren being a sexual deviant which me and my girlfriend happened by on one of the two channels she has on her television when we were bored on Wednesday night...a nice err...romantic comedy...or something. I don't know what the hell to call it. Fucked up film.

He obviously aged up to a point and then stopped aging. It doesn't really matter how though, the mechanics of it should be explored further by the audience as a thought experiment. Which is one of the dimensions which make the film so compelling — the unsaid things let it ripe really well in conversations outside the watching experience.

I believe they said something about his different life-states, or something, in which he only aged in the first one or two.
