The iPhone thread

Post by Jeff » Mon Jun 18, 2007 12:03 pm

So who's getting the iPhone? I have heard a lot of mixed feelings about it and I am interested in hearing what you guys think. I will be first in line. :)

I use Verizon and they couldn't close the deal with Apple (Verizon wanted to handle tech and customer support and Apple Inc. wouldn't agree) so I'm not getting one.

Otherwise I woulda.

PS: Apple Inc = AI. Coincidence? I don't think so!

I'd rush out and get one if it weren't for my whole family using Sprint :?

Any idea when it's coming out for other networks? I heard it's exclusive with AT&T for two (maybe more?) years.

I also think Apple Inc secretly stands for Artificial Insemination.

But uhh...what's an iPhone?

I have Verizon, so no. Cingular has terrible coverage where I live and with Verizon I get free minutes when I talk with whoever has Verizon. I'm not about to switch to Cingular so I can pay for another overpriced Apple product.

So here's my strategy:

Pay $150 for a good cellphone
Pay $300 for an iPod

And I still haven't spent how much an iPhone costs!

meh, I just look at the iphone as an ipod on steroids. I don't exactly have any big calling to do.

I do. And it stinks!

It's ridiculously easy to learn though. Especially for someone who already knows a bunch of languages, like you do iirc.

No help from me, I already have lots of stuff cooking, so..

The language itself, like most languages, is easy to learn - I learned it in one session at WWDC last week... However, what's not trivial is learning how to actually do things with it with the web browser. For example, how do you create a draggable, floating image in the middle of the screen that can be enlarged and shrunk with the click of a button, and displays different images it downloads from a mutable URL.

You use a framework like Prototype, or something like ZK and strictly stay on the API layer. It's definitely not as hard as it looks.

Edit: It's important not to reinvent the wheel here. A lot of things have been realized since the dawn of Ajax. Dig around and you'll see impressive solutions you can use with few LoCs. Just check out the Rico demos and the code to get that stuff going, for example.. Definitely not magic.

Prototype doesn't actually do anything other than extend the Javascript language to add some syntax sugar and make it more like Ruby, as well as smooth out some browser compatibility. The creator is a really nice guy, btw. I think what you really mean to mention is Scriptaculous or the Dojo toolkit. Whose respective creators I also saw at WWDC. :) However, they unfortunately don't do what I need to do. It's like the PhoenixUI problem. Sure there are plenty of open source "solutions" but in reality, none of them do what you really need them to do and you've got to roll your own.
