Instrumental

Post by Renegade_Turner » Thu May 07, 2009 8:58 am

Instrumental music never gets enough appreciation. On that note, I thought I'd make this page about some amazing instrumentals I've seen in my time.

*** John Butler - Oceans: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VAkOhXIsI0

*** Andy McKee - Rylynn: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsD6uEZsIsU

*** Michael Hedges - Ritual Dance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPB-ShG_UWY

*** Erik Mongrain - AirTap!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbndgwfG22k

*** Battles - Atlas: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSkU5GJmtXc (Although this song technically has "vocals" in it, Battles are an instrumental band. You'll see what I mean by "vocals". Also, I saw them live! They were amazing.)

*** Antoine Dufour & Tommy Gauthier - Jerry's Breakdown: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4BYMvVvMg0 (Quite funny as well as awesome.)

If you find more please post them. Also, please don't dismiss the music just because it's instrumental.

Wow, this T-cophony guy is AMAZING. This is exactly what I was looking for from this thread. Can you reccommend any way to actually get some of his music? I loved that short one "A Boy Hates Someone In Me" that he did on the electric too but he seems to be mainly acoustic.

My favourite one is actually this one though:

*** T-Cophony - Make Up Your Mind: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nf1WBogoD6Y

@Nerodx: OHHHH SHIT, I can't believe I overlooked Explosions In The Sky. I love them. I actually have two of their albums. It's funny how they present an instrumental album as a concept album. That confused me horribly to be honest. But yeah, great reccommendation! In fact, they're so good that, at Lollapalooza 2008, the frontman of the band "Brand New" Jesse Lacey accused the crowd of all being "fools" for not attending Explosions In The Sky instead, who were on at the same time. I'm pretty sure this came from Jesse Lacey's annoyance at being placed in the same time slot as Explosions In The Sky, because he knew everyone would want to go see them.

There's also a video on youtube which shows their last song of that set "You Won't Know", at the end of which Jesse Lacey takes off his guitar and fires it at the drummer's kit, narrowly missing decapitating the drummer. I lol'd. The video can be found here. Fast forward to 5:00 in the video to witness the extent of Jesse Lacey's anger at being placed in the same time slot as Explosions In The Sky. A related article can be found on AbsolutePunk.net here, which describes Jesse Lacey's descent into madness at the hands of Explosions In The Sky.

Explosions In The Sky - Your Hand In Mine (Live): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLlYQQrHmh8

@Richie Rabbit: I really don't like that one. I saw that on youtube too. Sounds way too processed.

You can get 3 of T-Cophony's albums on iTunes. One of them isn't there but it's REALLY early stuff.

EDIT: Scratch that...they're all there, all...5...of them. xD

I don't care if I'm necroing, this thread deserves more life. And I may have brought up some of these bands in previous threads, but they all deserve mention here:

Pelican: The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw is one of the best albums, instrumental or not that I have ever heard, and "March into the Sea" off the EP of the same name is one of my favorite single tracks. Everything that came before this album was excellent, everything that came after was just good.

Russian Circles: Hailing from the same city (Chicago) as Pelican, they are in my opinion, one of the best new post-rock bands to come out of this decade. I highly recommend anything they've done. They also put on one of the best live shows I've ever seen.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2-hJtJrXxc&fmt=18

Red Sparowes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uG2omwi0VEc

Godspeed You! Black Emperor: An older band, they are not 100% instrumental, though vocals are a very rare occurrence, aside from the samples and field recordings that they are known for. This is one of the bands that I have the most respect for in all of music.

If These Trees Could Talk: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lk2az2ar0pg

God is an Astronaut: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mlR9Iyy_X0

Giants: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLTDiS5kuyk

Caspian: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsli-nv9hJA

Scale the Summit: This band manages to push themselves apart from most other instrumental prog/tech metal bands with their excellence in songwriting. While they are neither the most progressive, nor the most technical of this style of music, they are one of the best in terms of that songwriting ability, rather than simple mindless wankery.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXq0FcYbAsU

Blotted Science: One of the more listenable bands I know of to deal in atonal/12-tone series music.

I opted for links instead of embedded videos due to the amount I posted, and not wanting to slow down page loading.

I play uke so I'm a huge fan of this guy
he adds a beautiful sound to the ukulele and pretty much dominates the ukulele stage (he is very humble though)

Liquid Tension Experiment! That's the band Mike Portnoy started. He's the best drummer ever. I stand by that statement. Check out the live video of him playing Honor Thy Father.

Also, I love every single band h2ostra reccommended except for Godspeed You! Black Emperor. This is odd considering I hate most of the noise metal stuff he reccommends. I love Giants in particular, although Pelican are also awesome. Sirius is brilliant.

Blotted Science is as technically brilliant as I would expect from a band with a member of Cannibal Corpse.

Also, interesting cameo from the Isis keyboardist in Red Sparowes.

I recalled you posting about both of these bands and thought I'd say that I'm going to see God Is An Astronaut in the Olympia Theatre in Dublin being supported by Caspian. While I already kind of knew and liked God Is An Astronaut, I hadn't ever heard of Caspian, and now them and maybe Giants are my favourites of the genre, so cheers. Can't wait to see them. November 6th. =D

This is pretty heavy in comparison to the other stuff that's been posted. Bit repetitive (which is annoying because this makes it longer than it needs to be) but still good. Probably not quite as good as all of your amazing songs, but whatever
