Prototype

Post by Blorx » Fri Jun 12, 2009 7:12 pm

Borrowed the PC version from a friend. Installing as we speak. Doubt it'll run, may just have to get the 360 version. I'll put results/thoughts up when I can. Thoughts on the game?

Worked on my comp on lowest settings. AMD 64 Live Dual [email protected] with ATi Radeon X1300. Warning to Skofo, the unrar and play version has most of the videos missing and you'll have to get a separate torrent to get them.

Yeah so here's my opinion so far. After playing for an hour and a half, I'm not thinking it's all that great. It's essentially Spiderman + the Hulk + Venom + GTA. =P

It's really not doing it for me with the plot and really, it's the carnage isn't enough to win me over. Neither is the open-worldness.

You have all your powers at the start...and then just lose them like that. The tutorial is ongoing, telling you through stop and read things as you go.

There's really not much to say, if you've seen the videos, you pretty much got it. Most of the missions are locate, infiltrate, destroy. And then there are "events" which are basically minigames using powers to get EP for upgrades.

I'd try inFamous but the PS3 is also being kept from me =P

I got it a few days ago for my 360, personally I love it. I beat the story mode yesterday and now I'm working on the achievements. I agree with you that the story isn't all that great, and all the web of intrigue stuff is pretty hard to follow. Still, I think it's a really fun game in the end, and the stealth concept actually works for the most part. It has it's flaws but is still better than some other attempts at it in my opinion. I'm enjoying the hell out of it now, but my interest is kinda going down now that I finished the game. Hopefully the whole new game+ thing will work out well.

It looks ridiculously over-the-top.

So much so in fact, that it almost makes a full circle and hits cool from the other side.

But not quite.

Prototype helps me relieve myself of the intense violent psychopathic anger I have on all of humanity... :D ... same as lugaru but only when the animals piss me off.. like when the birds poop on me when I have my new hat on.. :D ...

It's entertaining for what it is but promised a lot more. It's a huge letdown imo.

Yeah true but almost every game does that nowadays. No one can actually live up to the hype.

I mean it's not exactly living up to what the developers built it up to be. Living up to hype is one thing, seeing as most of it is overdone speculation anyways. Living up to what the devs say it is at gaming conferences is another. It's not even reaching those levels.

Nonetheless, it's a fun distraction from the slew of FPSs that always come out. >.>

That may be true, I can't think of a time I heard a dev talking about it. I remember reading about it in a magazine like a year or two ago, then couldn't wait to get it. That was a really long time ago, probably in its beta stages, maybe they got more ambitious afterword and made some promises they couldn't fulfill. Agree with the fps'es comment, there's so many now it's hard to keep up. Third person shooters are getting really common too...

Just got it through D2D, and I am LOVING it, it's awesome! Better graphics that gta IV, you can run up buildings, and you can frigging jump on someone and surf on their innards.

WHAT?! Better graphics than GTAIV?! No way. Prototype has some nice stuff on Alex and the civilians but all the darkness effects (they look like low res 2D images surrounding him), the explosions (they have Photoshop tutorials better than them), the city and the cars (bleh) have really low detail compared to other games today. And Fallout 3, TESIV: Oblivion, GTAIV and others have proved you can have an enormous world and still have great graphics. Not to mention, Prototype's scenery is so blocky it's ridiculous. Have you ever gone to one of the highest buildings and looked out in the distance? It looks terrible. >.> I even tried switching b/t High and Low levels of detail. The change was so tiny it was ridiculous. A lot of the lighting and particle effects were lost with detail but hardly anything looked different and how the frame rate was affected is beyond me. Then I rented the 360 version and was pretty unimpressed. I don't have an HDTV here but I don't think it would change much.

***NOTE: I have not played the PS3 version on an HDTV or anything but from my past experience, the PC version has the highest resolution and supposedly always has the best looks of the bunch.

This doesn't detract from the experience all that much (just adds disappointment), but once again...it's not living up.

I do however love surfing people's innards and the gliding has to be my favorite past time in that game. ^_^

[/rant over]

Anyways, in response to the 3rd person shooters getting common, I know. And it's a damn shame. I liked them better when they were all good except one or two because only dedicated devs would go for the 3rd person perspective rather than the first. (EX: Gears of War or Brute Force)

Blorx: I'm not noticing much of a difference on the PS3 version from what you've described. Sure, some of the contrast and color is a little better, but overall the game's structures and polygons are a little basic for their time. I know of PS2/XB0X/6th gen games with better overall graphics. Character designs are pretty, though.
