Stop Telling People To Update Their Drivers

Post by Renegade_Turner » Sun Dec 20, 2009 3:14 pm

Does anyone else get pissed off when there's a thread on a forum asking for technical help for a game that's crashing or whatnot, and 90% of the people say "Update you DirectX drivers." or "Update your graphics card drivers." I'd say that's only the solution in about 1% of cases. It's never been a solution for me! It's really irritating.

That's the end of my bitch.

That's why I always explain that they are updated if I'm looking for help.

Of course, wouldn't it suck if you spent days searching for the fix to a problem only to realize you had outdated drivers? It's a easy check, but can cause a lot of problems if they're not current.

The reason why people do that is simple: Occam's Razor

Always try the simplest solution first. In most cases simple solutions are not the most obvious ones and are overlooked easily. It is silly if it is not the solution to check, e.g. if all plugs are correctly inserted, but it is even sillier when you search for two hours and then notice the power cord was loose.

BTW: I think you are wrong and updated drivers are the solution in more than 10% of the cases. It has been for me with OG.

That's why I always stick to forums where I've been around for quite some time, where all regular members at least know I'm not stupid. ^^

The problem in this case is that I'm not sure that they don't think I'm stupid...

I think this is akin to if your [whatever] isn't turning on the first thing they ask you is if it's plugged in.

So you are saying, "Stop telling people ...", because you are "not stupid". Apart from the fact, I wouldn't call someone stupid, who forgot to update drivers or didn't know it could be the cause of his problems, you are just selfishly saying, people don't have the right to be "stupid", because you are not.

That's more like the old Ren ;)

No, I'm not saying that people shouldn't be told. I said the difference between me and the other people is that I'm not stupid, so in a subjective sense I've more of a justification to be irritated by being told to do something which is on par with asking someone who's saying that they're dying "Have you tried breathing?"

Forgive the overproportionate abuse of hyperbole.

The first quote is from the original post, the second quote is from a following post. In that space of time my viewpoint changed. Fail.

The point is that I am superior to people, so people should be told but I should not.

Even the use of quotes won't save you.

Your viewpoint changed. I win. My viewpoint is still the same as at the beginning.

You didn't win anything. I won, because my viewpoint changed as I realised something inside myself was changing.

You think not changing yourself is a victory? Accepting one's inaccuracies and learning from them is true victory. You've won nothing. I've attained equilibrium. The difference is you wouldn't accept it even if you were wrong.

I did change my viewpoint, and I also know I'm still fucking awesome.
