The humans could have made self-repairing material, and the heights that they go to also fit, since humans are currently building upwards, and who's to know how far up we'll have gone in the future?
You wrote that yourself, right? Or was it a quotation from somewhere else, perhaps the blog?
But with the blog link, and the drawing, it seems that Wolfire already had the idea of the future setting, I didn't know of this.
Yeah all the text is original from me, but it is basically my interpretations of the bits of information given out in the blogs.

Bits of info that can be inferred from the blog:
Overgrowth is a post human Earth.
Crete is basically reinforced concrete (concrete with rebar). This is clearly a artifact that takes from modern construction.
Monoliths are made of Crete.
Monoliths can regenerate, but at slow speeds.

My conclusions from that bits of info:
Crete is an nanotechnology infused form of reinforced concrete invented by advanced humans. This makes the material incredibly sturdy an self repairing. Perhaps it can even be used for self constructing structures, but that would require an abundance of raw resources and energy. Self repair could occur from recycling existing materials and collecting trace amounts of resources and energy from the surrounding environment. There would also be a need for control signaling to ensure the material maintains the desired shape. Of course in the post human world, such signals would no longer constrain the materials and only basic self-repair functionality should occur. But after the ages go by maybe there are glitches or mutations, in the self sustaining colony of nano bots, that exhibit emergent behaviors that are less mechanical and more 'organic'.

Perhaps if you want a story centered around human artifacts:
An interesting story could be about someone who learns how to nurture the nano bots back into a state that allows them to rapidly grow the materials and a conflict of others trying to take the techniques for themselves in order to gain superiority in resources.
