The Wolfire Design Blog

Post by Wilbefast » Wed Mar 18, 2009 8:17 am

I'm loving the Wolfire Design blog - it's great to be able to follow the game design process and see all the trials and tribulations that the team encounter and ultimately overcome. I've been trying to do the same sort of thing for Abomination, even if my relevations are pretty piss-weak, because I'm all for sharing ideas - I reckon we all benefit from a more liberal system rather than hoarding IP like paranoid old men.

Anyway, one of the game's I'm following at the moment, Elemental: War of Magic (from the people who made Sins of the Solar empire*), is doing a similar sort of thing in their "journals" section. They're not updated as often and they don't share quite as much but it's good to see that Wolfire are having some sort of impact, or at least that's what I'd like to believe:

We all know that Wolfire's going to be big, like Pavorotti "big" (I'm not talking about his career), and I wonder if their blog will continue after that. It seems strange that the larger the company, the less time they seem to have for their fans.

Here's hoping that more developers will take a leaf out of Wolfire's book,

* One of the new generation of "epic" RTSs: a wonderfully optimised game, unlike Supreme Commander, a wonderfully badly optimised game.

Spot-on!
*nod*

This is great research they're doing, and indeed, it should be shared.
Commercial game companies should take heed of the wise men's words.
